Champions League Match Report – Chelsea 4–0 Sevilla
At Drogba Arena, Chelsea turned in another dominant Champions League display, dispatching Sevilla 4–0 in front of nearly 80,000 fans, with attacking brilliance and relentless pressing from the Premier League leaders.
Netanel Sahar scored twice and Scott Crichton ran the show, notching two assists in a Man of the Match performance. Chelsea now lead Group E with 22 points, staying unbeaten and showcasing their continental pedigree.
A Blitz of Quality
Nabil Lahyane kicked off the scoring with a thunderous low drive from distance in just the 6th minute. Chelsea’s aggressive high press and incisive passing suffocated Sevilla, who looked overwhelmed from the outset.
Disaster struck for Lahyane personally in the 25th minute when he went down holding his ankle – later confirmed as a twisted ankle that will likely see him sidelined for several matches. Despite the setback, Chelsea did not relent.
Netanel Sahar bagged his brace in clinical fashion. His first came via a bullet header from Crichton’s whipped cross in the 40th minute, a goal which was briefly disallowed by the on-field official before VAR overturned the decision.
Just after halftime, Sevilla’s Diego Figueroa was punished for a poor clearance which fell kindly to Fernando González. The experienced midfielder drove forward and rifled a low strike past the helpless goalkeeper to make it 3–0.
In the 56th minute, McKauley Cizvelis was sent off for unsporting behaviour — a rare blemish in an otherwise perfect team performance.
Yet down to ten men, Chelsea continued their momentum. Sahar capped off the win in the 65th minute with another close-range header, again supplied by Crichton who had turned creator-in-chief for the night.
Control vs Counter
Manager Calin Dimario’s system was once again vindicated. His side’s structured control-based approach stood firm against Sevilla’s more fluid counter-attacking setup, which never got into rhythm. With 63% possession and 18 shots to Sevilla’s 4, the gulf in class was obvious.
In the group table, Chelsea remain top on 22 points — four clear of second-place FC Bayern. Sevilla, meanwhile, remain in 18th position with only 10 points, facing a difficult path forward in the tournament.
Fan and Media Reaction
Fans and pundits were effusive in their praise for Crichton. Chris Wainwright tweeted: “Being able to watch players like Crichton is why I love this job,” a sentiment echoed across social media.
Manager Dimario, speaking post-match, remarked, “The red card was disappointing, but otherwise it was a complete performance. Scott Crichton was majestic, and Sahar showed his killer instinct again.”
Looking Ahead
Chelsea now enter the Round of 16 with significant momentum. Dimario will hope Lahyane’s injury is short-term, and that Crichton and Sahar continue their electric form into the domestic and European run-in.
