Champions League: Real Madrid 1–1 Chelsea
Written by Digby (Match Reports)
Under the bright lights of the Bernabéu, Chelsea walked into the lion’s den and came out alive. Just alive — but still very much in control of their own fate.
Carl Pritchard struck first for Madrid, rifling one into the far corner on 42 minutes, and for a moment it looked like the ghosts of Europe might be stirring again. But Chelsea don’t do ghosts anymore — they exorcise them.
With the clock ticking down and the noise turning hostile, Scott Crichton rose above the chaos to nod home a late equaliser in the 86th minute. It was pure, old-school Chelsea — grit, pressure, and a refusal to die quietly in someone else’s cathedral.
Real Madrid dominated possession for spells, but Dimario’s side never lost their shape. McKauley Civzelis and Facundo Quiroga held the back line like marble pillars, while Rogério José worked the flank with menace. Crichton, named man of the match, ran himself into the turf — 4.6 kilometres covered in 10 minutes off the bench, a performance drenched in defiance.
“We knew we’d get one chance,” said Dimario post-match. “Scott took it. That’s what winners do.”
They leave Spain with an away goal, a draw, and that familiar feeling of inevitability. Stamford Bridge will host the second leg, and you can already feel it — Madrid have the name, but Chelsea have the momentum.
